AIR: The Great Southern Ocean (Laura Flanagan)

about

When I bought the plane ticket to Melbourne in 2018, I was driven by a desire to stand on the beach and look towards Antarctica. Even when it was pointed out to me that the beaches of southwestern Victoria are very cold and rainy in July, I could not be dissuaded from making the trip. (When you live in West Texas, cold and rainy during July sounds like the most glorious thing on earth!)

While in Australia, I stood on the beach along a stretch of the Great Ocean Road on multiple occasions – at sunrise, during grey clouds, in dripping rain, and at different times with rainbows ahead and behind me - staring across the water, listening and watching the surf crash. It was beautiful, intimidating, and life altering. It was also, without a doubt, cold, rainy, and completely glorious!

The first time was at Johanna Beach with my friend Emma, and when I, confused by the maps, asked her what the name of the body of water we were looking at was, she called it “The Great Southern Ocean.”
